In recent years, public health initiatives have increasingly emphasized the importance of awareness and preventative measures in combating serious illnesses such as lung cancer. Edith Cowan University Sri Lanka has taken a notable step in this direction by organizing the “Miles for Lungs” event, aligning academic efforts with community health promotion. This event not only fosters community engagement but also enhances understanding of lung health and cancer prevention among students, staff, and local residents.
Lung cancer remains a significant health concern globally and within Sri Lanka, with many cases detected late due to low public awareness. Early detection and lifestyle modifications can dramatically improve prognosis and quality of life for those at risk. Initiatives such as “Miles for Lungs” aim to educate the community about the causes, symptoms, and preventive strategies related to lung cancer. Education is a vital component in reducing stigma, encouraging early screening, and promoting healthier behaviors, including smoking cessation and increased physical activity.
Organized by the Bioholics Club of ECU Sri Lanka, the “Miles for Lungs” event was a creative blend of exercise and education, held on August 2nd in recognition of World Lung Cancer Day 2025. Participants embarked on a guided walking or running challenge that included checkpoints with interactive tasks such as quizzes, mini-games, and awareness facts. These activities highlighted crucial information about lung health, emphasizing how lifestyle choices—including regular exercise and avoiding tobacco—can strengthen lung function and decrease cancer risk.
Beyond physical activity, the event served as a platform for open conversations about lung cancer, aiming to dispel myths and reduce stigma associated with the disease. Volunteers and health experts actively engaged with participants, sharing insights on early symptoms and the importance of regular health screenings. The collective effort turned an ordinary day into a powerful movement toward health literacy and empathy within the ECU community.
