Education System in Canada

Canada maintains one of the best levels of education completed in the world. More than half (53%) of Canadians between 25 and 64 years of age have completed some type of post-secondary education; that the OECD average, compared, is 32%. Institutions are located throughout Canada; there are under 100 universities and 127 colleges.

In Canada, the provinces and territories are responsible to get all degrees of education including colleges and universities. Along with postsecondary alternatives, Canada provides a wide selection of boarding schools to students known because of his or her excellence in preparing young people for university and college placement.

College Levels of Canada

Canada's institutes and colleges are the most appropriate education associations. Their education model includes educators and professionals working in partnership with local businesses, communities, and industries. Canadian colleges aim to give students the abilities required for their careers in a highly competitive job market.

Canadian Universities

The education level offered by Canadian universities are high-quality and well respected across the universe. A degree from a Canadian university retains substantial prestige, thus making Canada a main target for many foreign students.

There are more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate degree programs available in Canadian universities, from certificates to PhDs and everything in between.

Universities and university colleges focus on degree programs but may also offer some diplomas and certificates, often in professional designations. University degrees are offered at three consecutive levels:

  • Bachelor's level students can enter after having successfully completed secondary school or the two-year cégep program in Quebec. Bachelor's degrees require three or four years of full-time study, but this depends on the province and whether the program is general or specialized.
  • Master's Degree typically requires two years of study after the bachelor's degree.
  • For a Doctoral Degree, three to five years of additional study and research plus a dissertation are the normal requirements.

For regulated professions such as medicine, law, education and social work, the education system in Canada generally requires a work placement to obtain a license to practice.

Types of institutions

There are different types of qualifications offered by various institutions of Canada.

  • University: Students can apply for the undergraduate degree, postgraduate certificate, diploma and degree, professional degrees and doctorate in universities of Canada. 
  • University colleges: Programs offered by university colleges include diploma and university transfer programs.
  • Community colleges: Students can get certificate, diploma, associate degree, undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma in community colleges.
  • Career and technical colleges: Certificate and diploma offered for technical education.
